Mike Hammel was easy to pal around with. A really nice feller and I wanted so much to meet up with him again. My hopes are with Mike's family and loved ones.

Peace be with you, Brother.

Mike was one of the nicest guys I knew in school. He was my first baseman our senior year and he caught many balls that should have been errors with his long reach. Just to see him do the splits while catching a low ball made me cringe. But we were all happy having him at first because we knew that if he could reach the ball he'd catch it. Mike was very thoughtful and genuinely happy for me when he congratulated me the day I was selected to play in the All Star game in Bellingham. The only time I ever sat out a baseball game was when Mr. Bianchi benced me for my defiance and Mike for being my friend. Mike and I didn't show up for practice one day. We decided to do other things that day and into the night. We might have been fine, but Mike got hungry so we went to the A & W drive-in. We loudly staggered right past Mr. Bianchi and his family sitting in their car eating and we were caught. The next game Mike and I were benced. Bianchi did put Mike in late in the game, but not me because I was really the focus of his anger. Shortly after graduating Mike said he was joining the Army so when my draft number was announced I decided to join instead of waiting for the inevitable. I already knew Mike's dad from baseball and knew he was an Army recruiter so I went to him to join the Army. Many years later I learned that Mike was ill and living in Spokane, but unfortunately I kept putting off a trip to see him until it was too late. Mike was a good friend and I was sadden to hear that he died of Melanoma Cancer and from complications due to exposure to Agent Orange while proudly serving his Country in Vietnam. I have many fond memories of Mike that I will keep forever. He was just one of those guys that everybody liked. I never heard anyone say a bad word about him. He was just a nice guy that made every one around him smile and I'm glad we were friends. Save me a spot on your team, Okay Mike. God Bless...Your friend Polo
